[A-F]

Bisuit firing
This is the first firing given to greenware when it is dry and before it is glazed. the biscuit firng temperature is lower than the temperature of the second (glaze) firing.

Burnishing
The process of polishing the surface of a pot until the clay is compacted and the surface smooth
and glossy .a hard object like a smooth stone or the back of a spoon is usually used.

Cone
A 3 sided ,pyramid -shaped object that is made of materials similar composition to a glaze. cones
are used inside the kiln to measure the heat work and will soften and bend over when the heat
work has been done and a specific temperature had been reached.

Earthernware
Pottery that, when fired, has a porosity of more than 5%.The maturing temperature of the clay and glazes is below 1200 degrees.C. it is relatively soft and so, for practical use, must be glazed
to make it waterproof. the clay body is available in white, buff and red.

Firing
Firing is the process of applying controlled heat to clay or clay and glazes in some form of kiln.
there are various types of firing ,each of which produces different effects.

[G-L]

Glaze
A layer of glass which is fired into place ona pottery body .The glaze provides a hygienic covering on pottery because it is smoother than the body it covers and it is not porous.

Greenware
These are clay pieces that have been completed but have not been fired.

Impressed
It is a form of decoration where by marks are made by impressing objects into the clay surface.
any object can be used for impressed decoration and it is done while the clay is still soft enough to take the impressions without cracking or splitting yet firm enough to give crisp definition.

Kiln

An oven which can withstand high temperatures that is used by potters to fire pottery. there are many different types of kilns and different fuels are used to build up heat in the chamber where the pots stand.

Leatherhead
It is the stage where plastic clay reaches during drying .The clay is stiff enough to be picked up without distortion yet soft enough to respond to pressure for burnishing.

Pierced decoration
Cutting through or piercing holes in the walls of pots and dishes is a form of decoration .it is done when the clay is leatherhard by the use of sharp blade or suitable hole bearing tool.

[S-Z]

Slab
Forming a ceramic form from sheets of clay.The slabs are wire cut ,beaten or rolled out .
They are then cut and used in soft state or stiffer to construct the form. Joints are usually scored and slurried.

Stoneware
Stoneware is a vitrified non-porous ware .the clay body and glazes are fired to about 1200 degrees C.and high firing stoneware can be fired upto 1366 degrees C.stoneware clay is also available in various colours -white,buff,red.

Terracotta
The word comes from the italian and means simply fired earth.Though the word is often used to describe the orange brown color of red burning clay.

Throwing
Handforming a mass of soft plastic clay on a rotating wheelhead is called throwing.
